Lill’ Bits:
Living in the past brings on feelings of depression. You get stuck in the “what ifs” and “should ofs”
Living in the future brings on feelings of anxiety. Worrying about what could happen.
Peace is found in the present moment.
Focusing on the here and now.
Below is a simple exercise to help bring you back to now when you find yourself overthinking and living in the past or future.
Coffee Orienting
Hold your coffee mug (or another non-alc beverage, I like tea) as you go through each of the following senses state what you notice out loud
Sight: observe the physical characteristics of your mug
Feel: Notice what the mug feels like in your hands
Smell: Inhale the aroma of the coffee note any scents
Taste: Take a sip and notice the flavors you taste
This simple practice can help reorient you when you are experiencing overwhelm.
I encourage you to use it daily.
The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness.
